General Class Information

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen!

My name is Dan Deloge, I am one of your Chief Instructors for the hunter ed safety class you’ve signed up for on April 6th and 12th. I wanted to welcome you, thank you, and go over a few thoughts and reminders before class. You may wish to print this for reference.

You must be present both days to become certified! The first day of class, Sunday, April 6th, will be at the Hillsborough Police Department. Enter through the doors at the back of the building. One of the instructors will be there to guide you. Please arrive promptly as our guest Conservation Officer(s) have a tight schedule and have on occasion arrived promptly at 8:00am. Now is the time to ask them questions, NOT during the hunt! I will have your class reading materials available. Bring a notebook and pens if you’d like.

Also, while there is no cost for the class, we’ve traditionally asked students to donate $1, which goes into a bank account. Because this is a volunteer position, instructors typically pay out-of-pocket for some supplies for the class. This small donation helps offset this cost, especially for things like postage, photocopies, paper and ink, or other supplies.

The second day of class, Saturday, April 12th, we will be at the Deering Fish and Game Club in Deering, NH. BRING PENS AND PENCILS!! The address is Fish And Game Road. If you are unfamiliar with our area, please contact me and I’ll give better directions, or if time allows I can meet you somewhere in town and you can follow me. Keep in mind we have an early start and even earlier for me for organizing, so advanced notice is key to staying on schedule as well as class consideration.

If you are 18 years of age or under, please make sure you have a signed written permission slip from a parent or guardian. I need this on file before you attend field day on the range and before I can certify you. Permission slips can be found online from the Fish & Game Department. If you have trouble, please let me know and I can send the link or provide a slip at class.

Weather has been spotty, this is New England, so be sure to wear/bring appropriate clothing for the 12th.  Be it rain, sun, chilly or hot, watch the weather, dress accordingly, and as previously mentioned field day we will be in the elements. Shorts are not advised; wear closed-toe shoes, not sandals, and water-resistant if not waterproof boots aren’t a bad idea, but keep in mind you’ll be doing some walking, so think comfort. Bug spray is good to have on hand since in previous years field day has had black fly issues. Hunting is rarely during ideal conditions; consider this class a warm up for your future hunting seasons.

If you need accommodations for the written test on Saturday, such as wanting or requiring the test be read to you, please let me know and I’ll be more than happy to work with you. Do be ashamed of anything, we’re here for you!

Water and snacks are allowed; bring a lunch on April 6th or make arrangements with area grocers for food, as we’ll have a half hour for lunch, but please be considerate of the police conference room for future classes.

In the past, questions about trapping have come up. Trapping is not covered in class but is mentioned in some books, it is its own beast entirely with very rigid laws and regulations aside from hunter safety. IN lieu of this, I am a licensed trapper and WCO (Wildlife Control Operator), as well member of the New Hampshire Trappers Association and happy to answer questions as best I can.

If you have any questions, shoot me an email or send me a text at 603-933-2710. I look forward to meeting you!

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                Dan Deloge

                                                                                                Chief Instructor
